In the early days the Post Office was at Higham Ferrers, and Rushden was a sub-office.

The Rushden Postman was Mr Jonathan Seckington, who would ride to Higham to collect the post and return to deliver it.

Note the wrought iron gate and railings atop the wall.

The building has not yet been identified, so if you recognise it we'd be pleased to hear.

About 1860 Rushden “Carrier”

I am told that a Mr Whitbread Maddock, Boot Maker, was the owner of a Donkey & Cart and it was the only conveyance to LET in those days.

In 1875 there was only one Horse & Trap to LET - that was Robinson, corner of Church St - High St.

Sally Barwick Carrier to Wellingboro'€ with Donkey & Cart. She lived in the house just opposite Fitzwilliam St -€ Duck St, and used to take the Donkey thro' Front Door to Backyard (a Mr Willmott told me this on Monday Sept 26, 1915). [widow - 'errand woman' in 1851]

Extract from a Note Book of J E Smith

Rushden Chapel-Yard - Mr Lewis (one of our Council men) told me on Wednesday May 25 1917, that old Jimmy Wood who used to keep a donkey & Cart lived in the Chapel-yard at the Corner of the Green near Mr Knight the barber. Wood used to attend the Wellingborough Market & do errands for people, so you see in those days he was a prominent useful man. I well remember the old old small barn which became a chapel, also a carpenters shop. I knew the building from March 1873 when I first came through Rushden to play at Souldrop Church. I cannot say what year it was pulled down & do not remember ever going in it as I had no time when I came through. JES

The Rushden Echo, 29th April 1898, transcribed by Kay Collins
