The Railway Bridges

A bit of a squeeze for double deckers

Evening Telegraph, March 1973

THE "Iron Bridge" at the end of Rushden High Street has been removed.

A spokesman for the firm who carried out the demolition, T. W. Ward of Sheffield, said today that the job had been finished satisfactorily."

Workmen began work on the railway bridge on Sunday afternoon, and yesterday a 25-ton crane was brought in to remove girders and cross-members.

Mr Stan Bent, who was in charge of the work, explained it was being removed because of the high cost of having it inspected and painted.

He added that they will probably be back in Rushden next week to remove a footbridge a few yards further up the line. The line has been disused for several years.

Accident - 1924

Evening Telegraph c1995

Though many in Rushden are mourning the possible loss of the local railway station museum, there must be few who miss this old railway bridge. It was so low that one private bus company had to let the tyres down on its double deckers for them to squeeze under.

This picture of the High Street (north) in the snow was taken by Colin Bryant of Victoria Road, Rushden. In the background is the old Royal Variety Theatre.

Demolition of the old railway bridge - came by email. The footbridge over the railway line was still standing.
