1937
Feb 12th - Friday Went to work. Fetched some wool for Win Freeman's jumper. Played piano. Went bed.
Feb 13th - Saturday Went to work. I did not feel very well but I stuck the morning, came home and went straight to bed and have stopped in bed until Thursday. The [doctor] came and said I could get up. During this short period I felt ever so bad on Saturday, Sunday and Monday but Tuesday morning came and I felt a little better, Wednesday much better. Now I wish my nose and mouth would get better, my mouth is full of tiny ulcers and it is sore and my nose, well you know how it is with a cold. Aunt Elsie bought me some black grapes. I was very pleased with them but could not eat them until Tuesday. Then my Sweetheart bought me a big bunch of black grapes and 6 great big Jaffa oranges and now bless him, if on Wednesday afternoon I received a letter from him saying that he has got a very bad cold or perhaps he has the 'flu so if he is not well I pray God will take care of him and keep him safe until the sun shines on his health.
Feb 18th - Thursday I woke up this morning and I have got the earache. I laid in bed until 10.40 then I got up for the first time. Oscar called round and he said Harold had got the 'flu. All today I was in pain. I cried many times because my ear ached and when I was in bed it started to bleed and all night long I was changing cotton wool because matter was coming out. I suppose it is a gather in my ear.
Feb 19th - Friday Got up about 11.0. I wrote a letter to Harold this morning, it is very lonely not seeing him. I have not seen him since last Sunday. The doctor came today about 5 o'clock, said I could go out when it is nice. Jessie Bass came up this evening.
Feb 20th - Saturday My ear is still running, all last night as well. Received a letter from Mrs Cuthbert this morning, saying that Harold has a bad throat and don't know whether it is septic. I hope I shall hear soon about him again. I thought he would be ill before long. He has been the same as me, had a cold on and off since Christmas.
Feb 21st - Sunday Got up about 12 o'clock. Wrote a letter to my sweetheart. Kath came in, Win Freeman and also Joan (Tomlin) came to see me. Well my ear is still discharging.
Feb 21st - Monday Went out for 5 minutes. Went round Grandma's and up the street. Doctor came.
Feb 22nd - Tuesday Receive a letter from Harold. Went down the street for a walk. Wrote a letter to Harold.
Feb 23rd - Uncle Frank B. Got up about 10.15. Dad got a cold. Went over Higham to Aunt Kate's with Mother.
Mar 8th - Monday [Ada plays Gita the gipsy in the Brigade Panto - but makes no mention of it in her diary this year]
April 9th Today is my birthday, one of the most wonderful days of my life. I am 21 years old today.
April 10th  I kept my birthday in the Masonic Hall and I had about 70 guests. Mrs Hornsey was the pianist and Uncle Frank gave the toast. I think everybody enjoyed themselves. We finished about 11.30 and I went with Elsie and Lucy up Aunt Clara's to sleep. Aunt Annie, Uncle Sam and Joyce. Mr & Mrs Davy & Clemmie came for the weekend.

These are the names of the guests who came to my 21st Birthday.

This newsclip is in the photograph album with the photos of the event.
