Queen Victoria - Old Stables

yard
A yard behind the old Queen Victoria Hotel.
The old stables building behind the Queen Victoria Hotel, when it was no longer needed, became workshops at the ground floor and meeting rooms above in what would have been the grooms' living accommodation. Access into the yard was from the top of North Street.

Part of it was also used by R & A Kohnstamm, leather factors, from around 1930 until at least the 1950s.

One of the workshops was used by H & J Smith. Jack Smith and his brother Harry, worked togther and they made surgical boots.

Another of the workshops was where Cottingham & Reid made bicycles, in the 1960s. Many of the local cyclists who rode in time trials, and progressed like Rushden's own Fred Wood, would have probably bought their racing cycles from them.

Upstairs was a meeting room for the CYA Club in the 1950s through to 1989 and possibly later.
