An accident occurred in 1921 which destroyed the shop window. Following the repairs the Chettle girls wanted a bigger shop, so Thomas seems to have exchanged with them. In the early 1930s he moved to 29 Fitzwilliam Street, just across the road.

Thomas was unable to work when his wife was ill and may have retired too. Laura died in March 1936.

James was running both shops in 1936, but soon closed the Fitzwilliam Street shop.

Thomas G was buried 02 May 1951 aged 81 in Grave DA3338/9 in Rushden Cemetery.
