Rufus B Jephcote

Rushden Echo, 2nd June 1916, transcribed by Gill Hollis

Rushden Decisions Challenged To The Central Tribunal

Rufus Bradley Jephcote, a Rushden hairdresser and tobacconist, whose claim has been dismissed by the Rushden Tribunal, asked for absolute exemption, on the ground that he would be ruined if he went into the Army. He said he was unable to be present when his appeal was before the Rushden Tribunal, a sudden rush of business keeping him at home. Appellant was married in June 1914. The appeal was dismissed.

Rufus Bradley Jephcote opened his shop in 1914 at High St South opposite the National School. He came to Rushden with his wife, Kate Milns (nee Danby), and her young sister Gladys Nellie Danby. Rufus was born at Leicester and Kate and Gladys hailed from Horncastle.

They lived at 35 Cromwell Road, and a still born first child was buried 17 Aug 1918, and a second child Avril was born in 1925, and a second still born was buried 01 Jul 1930. Sadly their young daughter Avril P died aged 8 and was buried 25 Feb 1933 in Rushden Cemetery Grave D 697:

The shop kept by A E Chettle - about 1935 was Jephcote Hairdressers.

The shop was taken over by Rufus Jephcote, and once again advertised as a ladies' hairdresser. He also did a ‘round’ in Rushden to cut hair in people’s own homes. [see Stella Reynolds - memories]

A noted pianist who played at events throughout the district.

He moved the business to 31 Queen Street in the 1950s. [perhaps when James Jervis closed his hairdressers?]
