James Hewitt married Mary Corby on the 27th September 1779, and they were both single, and of Rushden. Here they had children, Sarah in 1785, Elizabeth in 1781 (died 1782), Ann in 1788, Mary in 1790 (died 1790), and James in 1796, and he appears to have been twice baptised; in 1796 and again as an adult in 1816. James died 21st December 1820, aged 70 and Mary died 10th January 1834, aged 82. James Hewitt, junior became a watchmaker, and he married Elizabeth Briggs in 1817. Elizabeth Briggs was born in Little Harrowden in 1796 to Constantine Briggs of Wellingborough and Ann (Achurch) Briggs of Rushden. James also did some work from 1817 on the church clock. [Perhaps he wound the clock too.] James is listed in Kelly's 1847, 1855, and Whellan’s 1849 trade directories, and was living in the High Street. Their children were: Levi born in 1818, Eliza c1822, Harriet born 21st March 1824, Thomas born 23rd February 1827 (died 1847), William born 10th August 1832 and Charles born 1838. The last four were baptised together in 1841 at St Mary's Church. Levi became a watchmaker, and was in Northampton in 1841, and Eliza was working at Higham Ferrers as a servant to William Adcock, a farmer. The other boys all worked in the shoetrade, and Harriet was in service with Morris Whiting, innkeeper.
Charles Hewitt was the only one still at home when the 1861 census was taken, and he was working as a clicker. Charles married Elizabeth Ann (Steele, born Kings Lynn) later in 1861. By 1871 Charles and Elizabeth had three children; Sarah, Charles and Elizabeth. Charles was now a bookseller and stationer. He also became the sub-postmaster in Rushden, the main office being at Higham Ferrers. Charles retired in 1901. His daughter Elizabeth took on his business, and she also took several photographs and published them as postcards. |
