The funeral took place on Monday of the late Mr Charles Hewitt, formerly postmaster of Rushden, whose death we recorded last week. The Rev C J Keeler (pastor of the High-street Independent Wesleyan Church, Rushden) was the officiating minister. A brief and impressive service was conducted at the residence of the deceased, and the coffin was then taken to the cemetery for interment. The mourners were:- Mr William Hewitt (brother) and Miss S Hewitt (daughter), Mr Charles Smith (nephew) and Miss E Hewitt (daughter), Mrs Charles Smith and Miss L Clark. Mr George Denton represented the High-street Independent Wesleyan Church and Mr John Clark the Wellingborough-road Independent Wesleyan Mission. The Rushden Adult School was represented by Messrs John Claridge, J.P., C.C. (the hon. secretary), C Cross, H Cartwright, E Coleman, and Page. The body was enclosed in an elm shell, with massive outer coffin of unpolished oak with solid brass fittings, and on the breastplate was the inscription:- Charles Hewitt Died April 19th 1911 Aged 78 years. By request no flowers were placed on the coffin. A number of friends had gathered at the Cemetery to show a last tribute of respect to one who had played an important though unobtrusive part in the social and religious life of the town, amongst them being Messrs G Selwood, E Wrighton, A Gadsby, C G Cunnington, W Desborough, F Skeeles, H Darnell, Mrs G Denton, Mrs H Brawn, and many others. Messrs Clark and Sanders were the undertakers, the carriages being supplied by Mr Asher Abbott.
