The Queen's Guide award - the highest award available to members of guide companies - has been attained by two 16-year-old members of the 1st Rushden (St. Peter's) Guides.

Patricia Mantle (left) and Elizabeth de Chastelain

They are Elizabeth de Chastelain, of 135 St. Margarets Avenue, Rushden, and Patricia Mantle, of 22 Upper Park Avenue, Rushden.

The girls were congratulated on gaining the award at the Church Room, Midland Road, on Tuesday, by Mrs. T Morgan, the assistant county commissioner, who presented them with their awards.

The presentation was attended by Guides and Brownies, parents and friends.

Elizabeth is a cadet nurse at St. Mary's Hospital, Kettering, and Patricia is still at school.

Tremendous test

Elizabeth was formerly a member of the Salvation Army Guides, but transferred to the St. Peter's Guides about three years ago. Patricia joined St. Peter's Guides about four years ago.

Mrs. Morgan said that their efforts had been a tremendous test. She explained the work they had undertaken among the Cubs and Brownies and said that it was fairly easy to do good turns for a short time "but three months is a very long time".

She added that Guides had a tremendous opportunity of showing the outside world what could be done.
