1937 Coronation
Celebrations in Rushden
"God Bless our King and Queen"

The Royal Family in 1937

“With my wife as helpmeet by my side, I take up the heavy task which lies before me. In it I look for the support of all my peoples”.

In these words the King, in the assurance of contented private life, spoke to his Accession Council.

Their Majesties King George VI & Queen Elizabeth
with the Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose.

Foreword by the Chairman of the Council

The greatest Empire the World has ever known is making preparations for the crowning of its King and Queen. Not only will the eyes and hearts of the British Empire be centred on London on May 12th, but all nations through their representatives will pay homage to King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.

Fellow citizens, in our loyalty we give place to none, we salute the Flag that flies over the British Empire and we say "God Bless our King and Queen".

It is fitting that we should share in the festivities and thus feel that we are part of that vast concourse which pays its tribute to the Throne and joins in the universal prayer "God Save the King".

As I write, the great day seems very near, interest is growing, enthusiasm is everywhere revealing itself and if I mistake not the people of Rushden will, with one voice, rise to honour the newly crowned Monarchs.

The amount of service so freely given on an occasion like this can never be tabulated; work may be measured but service never. To all who have planned and helped in any way we offer a big "Thank You". May the day be crowned with joy and blessing.

We do well to remind ourselves of the significance of the Coronation Ceremony with its underlying three-fold oath that our beloved King will take. In this he will express his determination that life in all its phases shall be based upon the things that make a country really great; we should do well

W E Capon - Chairman of the Urban District Council
Mr. W. E. Capon
to emulate his faith and put it into practice. Sincerely yours,

W. E. Capon
Rushden, 1st May, 1937

May I suggest that if we all wear emblems, and that if all car owners decorate their cars, it will add much to the spirit and jollity of the day.
