Wartime Wooing

Alan and Jean Bing.A WARTIME romance led to a lifetime of happiness for Alan and Jean Bing.

The couple were married in 1942 and celebrated their golden wedding anniversary yesterday.

Mr Bing, who comes from Canterbury in Kent, was serving in the Tank Corps when he met his future bride in Wellingborough.

The couple, who live in Westfield Avenue, Rushden, have three children, eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

After the war Mr Bing worked at Lilley's Haulage in Wellingborough, the Co-op in Rushden, and spent 20 years as a caretaker at South End Junior School, Rushden.

His wife spent most of her working life in the shoe industry.

Mr Bing said: 'We've had some good times together."

Picture of happiness for Gill

A gift for Gill

Thanks – chairman of governors at Rushden South End Infants’ School Robin Underwood presents Gill with her gift to mark
her long service

POPULAR classroom assistant Gill Burridge has notched up a total of 25 years' service with schoolchildren.

Mrs Burridge, of Barnwell Drive, Rushden, began working as a lollipop lady for South End Infants and Junior schools in Rushden 25 years ago.

She became a classroom assistant at the junior school and at one time worked as a classroom assistant at both the junior and infant schools.

She also acted as a support worker for a child with cystic fibrosis who progressed through both schools.

When he left she continued as classroom assistant at the infant school, mainly supporting Year 1 pupils.

Her links with the school have been strengthened as her three children were all educated there and she is now a community governor.

Mrs Burridge, who has two grandchildren, was presented with a picture to mark her long service by chairman of governors at the infants' school, Robin Underwood.

A celebration cake in the school colours of green and gold was cut during a get-together for staff and governors.
