It is announced that out of over 40 applicants, Mr W A E Sherwood has been appointed to the post of headmaster at the Rushden South End Council School in succession to Mr B M Jones, who recently retired in order to safeguard his health.

Mr Sherwood belongs to the staff of the Rushden Intermediate School, and among those who congratulate him with the most heartiness will be the sportsmen of the town and district. He has a firm belief in the value of organised sport among the children, and is himself a thorough sportsman, with special interest in football.

The new headmaster was born at Wollaston and became a pupil teacher at the Council School there, afterwards serving for three years on the teaching staff. From Wollaston he entered Borough-road College, London (where many local headmasters were trained), and on the completion of his training was awarded the College teaching prize and a special merit certificate for advanced music and teaching. In the final examination he gained distinction in advanced music and science.

Mr Sherwood’s first scholastic post in Rushden was as a teacher at the North End School. It was interrupted by a period of war service with the R.N.A.S., but Mr Sherwood returned to North End after the War and was selected for the original staff of the Intermediate School, which was established in the North End premises. Altogether he has taught in Rushden for 14 years, and his special subjects have been mathematics, English, music and organised games. He has been on the staff of the Rushden Evening Institute since 1919, taking classes in practical mathematics and science, and, during the last four years, the applied science classes in connection with the Boot and Shoe Syllabus.

Mr Sherwood is an ex-president of the Rushden and District Association, National Union of Teachers, ex-chairman of the Northants County Schools’ Athletic Association, and chairman-elect of the County Schools’ Football Federation. He is the hon. secretary of the Rushden and District Schools’ Sports Association and has been secretary of the football section ever since its formation soon after the war. He also takes a close interest in the affairs of the Rushden Town F.C.
