Walker Family

Ivy Cottage
Walker family home - Ivy Cottage - built 1903
79 Kimbolton Road - next to the Ivy Boot Works

Frank Walker and Mary Hannah (nee Jackson) were married, aged 27, in 1894. Frank was born at Ringstead, and Mary at Raunds.

Two years later Frank became the secretary at the Productive Boot Works at Higham Ferrers, and the family moved to Kimbolton Road.

In 1898 they had a son Frank Leonard but he died aged 5, and another child also sadly died.

But in the 1911 census they had two daughters, Constance Mary born in 1902, and Leonora Annie born in 1906.

A son Donald was born in 1914, and he married Joyce (nee Bailey). They had three children, William, John and Judith.

In 1917 he resigned from the Productive Boot Works, and founded Walker & Gunn, shoemakers.

Frank became an Alderman of the Borough, and served as the Mayor several times. In 1940 his daughter Connie was the Mayoress, as his wife Mary had died in 1940.

Constance visited Australia in 1947, and travelled on a flying boat, taking seven days to make the journey, to visit some cousins who had emigrated. She married Albert Johnson in 1948.

Frank died in 1952.

Frank's son, Donald continued the firm and was joined by his son William in the business. They traded until 1964.

The annual children's tea in connection with the Labour Party was held in a field lent by Mr G Lucas on Saturday last. Games and sports were held, and Mr and Mrs F Walker presented the prizes to the winners. Tea was served by two ladies of the committee.

Fourth from right, I think, is Alderman Frank Walker

I wonder if anyone may recognise one of the other gentlemen.
