Mr. and Mrs. J. Barker, of Stanwick, have received official notice of the death of their second son, Pte. E. W. Barker, Northants Regt., aged 22 years, who fell in action on February 17th.
Bombardier F. W. Endale, R.F.A., has sent the following letter to Mrs. Barker:
“Dear Madam,I am not sending to you officially and I am a stranger to you, but I hope that in sending the enclosed articles from the pockets of Pte. Barker I am causing you no further grief. I trust you may be glad to have some things of his. Pte. Barker was buried by some of our men. I am sending the photo and books from his pocket; and his belt, which I also have, I cannot send yet, as it will mean making a parcel. If you would like it, I will do my best to send it, on hearing from you. Nothing of value has been found on him. I should have mentioned a cigarette case. Let me, although a stranger, send my sympathy and best respects. I cannot wish you better than the comfort found in the little book of prayers and hymns which he carried. You will notice where the bullet pierced his notebook and papers.”
