Men on the War Memorial for WWII

Notes made by Mrs Evelyn Ablett
The results of her more thorough research into these men was passed to a villager, but has now been mislaid.

Marshall Church

Went to Wymington School, won prizes at Chapel, worked at Claridge’s.

Boxed in Battalion Championship.

William Clayton

Lived opposite Old Rectory, Rushden.

Only son of Mrs Mena Evans.

Trained by Vauxhall as a car mechanic.

Died in a tank battle.

Clifford Knight

Born 8th April 1923

Son of Mr & Mrs Knight, married Evelyn Dickerson in 1943. He was a keen swimmer and a fine musician. Gained his wings at RAF Cranwell and became a Spitfire pilot.

Died June 1945 in Burma.

William Lawrence

Thought to have come to Wymington as an evacuee from London. Family lived in the lone cottage in Long Lane.

Harold Wood

Only son of George & Alma Wood, lived in the row in New Wymington and went to school here.

Died 1944.

Herbert Wright

Son of Mr & Mrs Silas Wright, lived in the row in New Wymington and went to school here.

Died 1942 on the ‘Arethusa’ which was blown up.
