COUNTY sports personalities took part in celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of a family business.

To celebrate the anniversary of Townsends (Garages), in Rushden, customers had a chance to join in a Scalextric grand prix with players from Northampton Saints and Rushden & Diamonds as well as Townsends own team.

The start of the business in 1948 also coincided with that of the Morris Minor.

The first car was on display from the British Motor Industry's Heritage Trust, together with other classics and present day Rovers and Hyundai vehicles.

There was also a chance to view the workshops and take part in handicraft sessions led by The Craft Centre.

The businesses original directors were Don Gibson, Charlie Bond, Eric Perkins, Ray and Frances Goodey and Jack Smith.

The following year Mr Smith and the Goodeys resigned from the business to concentrate on Townsends (Carriers).

Mr Gibson is a director and was actively involved in the business until five years ago.

The current managing director is Robert Gibson, his son, who joined the company in 1965 after qualifying as a chartered accountant.

The garage offers a full range of services including new and used car sales, service and repair, parts, accessories, bodywork and paint, petrol and a shop. Last year it won an award.
