St Mary's Church
Memorial Inscriptions

St Mary's Church and churchyard are situated in a prominent position in the centre of Rushden, and the churchyard has four points of access.

Following the rapid increase in Rushden's population due to the boot and shoe industry, the town's municipal cemetery was opened in 1888 and no further interments were allowed in the churchyard. Some people living after then are, however, recorded here, because their names appear on memorials inside the church, or because, although not interred in the churchyard, there is a memorial to them in the Garden of Rest. A full record of people whose ashes were interred in the Garden of Rest is kept in a book in the Memorial Chapel inside the church, and is not included here.

Some of the churchyard was lost in 1959 as a result of a scheme to widen the A6. Some graves were removed at this time, and it is possible that at least some of them are included within the section on memorials recorded in the past but no longer there.

The few memorials in the churchyard which are made of slate are generally easily readable, whereas those made of other types of stone tend to be more difficult to read.

Memorials in the Church

Memorials are numbered according to the enclosed plan and numbering starts at C1 in the north east corner of the Pemberton Chapel and continues around the church in a clockwise direction. Descriptions are in round brackets and stonemasons' names are in square brackets. In some instances, inscriptions on memorials which are no longer legible exist in earlier transcripts. They are given in square brackets, along with the source of the information.
