St Mary's Church
Memorial Inscriptions

St Mary's Church and churchyard are situated in a prominent position in the centre of Rushden, and the churchyard has four points of access.

Following the rapid increase in Rushden's population due to the boot and shoe industry, the town's municipal cemetery was opened in 1888 and no further interments were allowed in the churchyard. Some people living after then are, however, recorded here, because their names appear on memorials inside the church, or because, although not interred in the churchyard, there is a memorial to them in the Garden of Rest. A full record of people whose ashes were interred in the Garden of Rest is kept in a book in the Memorial Chapel inside the church, and is not included here.

Some of the churchyard was lost in 1959 as a result of a scheme to widen the A6. Some graves were removed at this time, and it is possible that at least some of them are included within the section on memorials recorded in the past but no longer there.

The few memorials in the churchyard which are made of slate are generally easily readable, whereas those made of other types of stone tend to be more difficult to read.

Memorials in the Churchyard

Stones are mostly upright and undamaged, and each is numbered according to the enclosed plan. Descriptions are in round brackets and stonemasons' names are in square brackets. In some instances, inscriptions on memorials which are no longer legible exist in earlier transcripts. They are given in round brackets, along with the source of the information.

129. This inscription came to light when extracting notes from the books of J E Smith - His notes written in 1928 state:

The workmen clearing away the soil between Vestry Hall & Mr Whites Boot Factory found a well with a gravestone on top of it. It was the garden of the old Church House. The well is about 20 feet deep, stone built, is within a yard of the steps leading to the Porch of the Vestry Hall, just opposite of that first landing of the steps. The stones of the wall are very smooth on the face as if they have been there a long time. The friction of the bucket up and down made them smooth. The thick stone which looked like iron stone, lay on the top of well & has upon it:-

Here lieth ye body of Thomas, son of Moses & Mary Gobby,
who departed this life May . . . 26 years of age 1728.
‘Death comes to all both rich and poor,
To old and young He does not miss a door,
To which He has to fetch them must away,
Their glass being empty they now no longer stay’.
