Born at Oldland Common, near Brixton, GLS, Clifford was aged 19 and working as a clerk when he enlisted at Rushden on 9th September 1914. He was examined at Northampton the same day and was 5' 9" tall, weighed 122lbs, chest 34" (2" expansion), with a fresh complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, and C of E; his father William Arthur of 45 Midland Road, was next of kin. Clifford joined the 7th Northants the following day. He was reported missing on 27th September 1915. |

Rushden Soldier Missing
Pte Clifford Thompson, of the same battalion [7th Northants Regiment], is also missing. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Thompson, of Midland-road, Rushden. Before enlisting (soon after the outbreak of war), Pte Thompson was well known as a clerk at the Coxton Shoe Company, and prior to that acted in a similar capacity at Messrs. John Cave and Son.

Rushden Men Missing - Privates C Thompson - News Wanted
Mr and Mrs W A Thompson, of 45, Midland road, Rushden, have received official news that their son Pte C Thompson, 15387, C Company, 7th Northants, has been missing since the engagement of Sept. 27th. They will be grateful to any of his comrades who can send them any information concerning their son. He enlisted on Sept. 9th 1914, and prior to his joining the colours was in the employ of Croxton Shoe Co., Rushden. It is nearly seven weeks since Mr and Mrs Thompson received a letter from their son.

Rushden Soldier Victim - Pte Clifford Thompson - Death Assumed
Mr and Mrs W A Thompson, of 45, Midland-road, Rushden, whose son, 15387, Pte Clifford Thompson, Northants Regt., was officially reported missing after the battle of Loos on Sept. 27th last year, have now received advice from official quarters that, as no further news has been received concerning him, his death must be assumed. The official notice is accompanied by the customary letter of sympathy from the King and Queen.
The late Pte Thompson, aged 20, who enlisted on Sept. 9th, 1914, was, up to the time of his joining the colours, chief clerk at the Coxton Shoe Co., Rushden. As a lad he passed through St Peter's Sunday School. He was formerly a member of the Rushden Adult School Institute.
