Rushden’s Casualty List
Mrs Coles, of 39, Pytchley-road, Rushden, has been officially informed that her husband, 22650, Pte. Albert Ernest Coles, Royal Sussex Regiment, was killed in action on September 18th. The late Pte. Coles, who was 37 years of age, joined the Colours just over 12 months ago, and went to France on December 11th last. Up to the time of enlistment he was an N.C.O. of the Rushden Company 2nd Batt. Northants Volunteers, and worked for Messrs Jas. Hyde, Ltd., boot manufacturers, Rushden. Mrs Coles, up to Monday last, had received no intimation of her husband’s death except the official document, and she will be grateful to any of his officers or comrades who can send her any further particulars.

An Old V.T.C. - Rushden Footballer Killed
Pte. Albert Ernest Coles, of the Royal Sussex Regt., son of Mrs. J. Coles, of 33 Spencer-road, Rushden, and husband of Mrs. Coles, of 39 Pytchley-road, Rushden, has been officially announced as killed in action on Sept. 18th in France. Pte. Coles, who was 37 years of age, enlisted in August, 1917, and went to France on December 11th last. He passed through the retreat in the spring and the recent advances, and only received a bruised shoulder. Before joining up he was employed by Messrs. Hyde, Ltd. The deceased soldier was once a member of the Higham Ferrers Wesleyan Football Club, and joined the Rushden V.T.C. on its formation.
