Rushden Echo, 8th June 1917, transcibed by Gill Hollis

The dedication of the Roll of Honour, which has been placed in Church-street, bearing the names of lads from Church-street, Alfred-street, and John-street, took place last night, the service being conducted by the Rector (Rev. P. Robson).  Addresses were given by the Rev. C. J. Keeler and the Rev. P. J. Richards, and the hymns were “O God, our help” and “God moves in a mysterious way.”

The first collection realised £7 6s. 7d., and the amount put in the box at the dedicatory ceremony totalled £1  1s. 3½d., making in all £8  7s.  10½d.

After the expenses, amounting to £2  19s.  7d., have been defrayed, there will be a net balance of £5  8s.  3½d.

The case containing the Roll of Honour and the collecting box is made of oak, the work having been carried out by Messrs. Whittington and Tomlin.  The names are beautifully inscribed by Mr. A. T. Nichols.  The committee is as follows: Mesdames A. T. Nichols (secretary and treasurer), Hopper, Buttling, Robinson, Sumpter and Stevenson.

Rushden Soldiers Remembered - The Church Street District Roll of Honour - Letters of Gratitude
The committee of the Church-street, John-street and Alfred-street Roll of Honour have sent a postal order for 3s to each of the lads whose names are inscribed thereon, and the secretary, Mrs T Nichols, has received many letters of appreciation from the recipients. The following are extracts from the letters received:

Pte. H. W. Harbour, M.G.C., B.E.F., France: It seems nice to be remembered by our friends. When one gets this side of the water it makes him think of the dear homeland.

Sapper J Brown, R.E.: I was pleased to see that our old friend, the Rev C. J. Keeler, gave an address at the dedication of the Roll of Honour. I had the pleasure of meeting him last year when he was amongst the boys in France. I am getting on nicely in hospital in Boulogne, and hope soon to be convalescing.

Lce-Corpl T R Robinson, Northants Regt.: I came home for 48 hours. I had a look at the shrine, and think it very beautiful. It makes our duty seem much easier when we known that the people at home are always thinking of us. I have never been anywhere where the people have taken so much interest in the war shrines as at Rushden. It is a great credit to good old Rushden.

Pte. G. Stevenson writes that he left for France on June 14th.

Second A.M. Bob Jarvis: I was pleased to see I am not quite forgotten, being away from dear old Rushden.

Corpl. F. Chettle, T.R.B., writes that he is most grateful for the gift.

Pte S E Cave, MGC: says he had heard from his wife how nicely the shrine was decorated with flowers.

Pte. H. A. Buttling, A.S.C.: I received a full account of the dedication service from home and also read the account in the “Rushden Echo”, and conclude you must have had an impressive service.

Letters and cards of thanks have also been received from Lce.-Corpl. F. Hopper, Ptes. C. H. Miller, R. White, R. Brown, B. Chettle, H. Danby, A. S. Dunkley and others.
