A new scheme for training closing room machinists, 25 July 1957

Shoe manufacturers in the Rushden and Wellingborough areas have agreed to support a scheme for training closing room machinists due to start in September at the Rushden Boot and Shoe School . Manufacturers will meet the cost while operators are undergoing training.

The scheme has been devised by SATRA and a full time specially trained instructor is to be employed.

The first course will be attended by 8 trainees nominated by their employers and it is expected that 40 will be trained in a year.

An integral part of scheme is that after completing the 8 weeks course, training is continued under the industry’s recruitment and training scheme.

Two new courses for young people entering the footwear industry, 9 June 1959

Two new courses to prepare youngsters for careers in the footwear industry start at the County Schools of Boot and Shoe Manufacture at Kettering and Rushden in September.

The first will be a one year full time course of instruction for boys and girls leaving school and the second involves part time attendance at the Boot and Shoe Schools by children in their last year at Secondary Modern Schools.

The one year course will help young people with transition from school life to industry and enable them to start technical education for the industry at an age when they are most receptive to learning.

Application for admission can be made on behalf of young people leaving school at the end of the summer term. No fees are charged, travel expenses may be claimed and parents can apply for maintenance allowance.
