The Rushden Echo, March to September 1898, transcribed by Kay Collins
Miss Emma Wooding 1898
The Rushden Echo, 4th March 1898, transcribed by Kay Collins

A fortnight ago we called attention to the pitiable case of Miss Emma Wooding (daughter of Charles Wooding, of West-street, Rushden, roadman in the employ of the Urban Council). For 18 years Miss Wooding has been suffering from a spinal complaint. Medical opinion has been received to the effect that if the patient could be sent to an institution where she would receive the massage treatment she would without doubt derive considerable benefit physically and probably a perfect cure would be effected. Miss Wooding's relatives are quite unable to bear the cost, which is estimated at about £50, and we have now pleasure in making a public appeal for subscriptions. All donations, large or small, will be thankfully received by any member of the committee or by the Editor of this journal, and will be acknowledged in the columns of the Rushden Echo. The Rev. J. R. Blunt (Curate of Rushden) is chairman of the committee.

A Meeting of The Committee

was held on Wednesday evening last when preliminary arrangements were made. Mr. Field said the case had been made public through the Echo and they must now work to raise the money. Several members thought there should be no insurmountable difficulty in raising £50 for so worthy an object.

Another meeting will be held next Wednesday night in the Church-room near the Public-hall, Rushden, at 8 p.m. Anyone interested in the case will be heartily welcomed.

Collectors

The following have consented to receive subscriptions:—

Mr. W. Bazeley, Trade Union Office.

Mr. C. Cross, Echo Office.

Mr. T. Field, West-street.

Mr. Freeman, Crabb-street.

Mr. G. Parker, 21, Montague-street.

Mr. Jos. Pogson, Pemberton-street.

Mr. S. Sargent, 11, Queen-street.

Mr. W. J. Sedgman. High-street.

Mr. Smart, 76, Moor-road.

Mr. Harry Willis, West-street.

Mr. Jos. Willinott, West-street.

Other collectors are to be appointed, and persons willing to assist are asked to communicate with the Editor of the Echo, or with Mr. Smart, 76, Moor-road.

Note: By June, these names were added to the list of collectors:

Mr. Wm. Hardwick, Windmill-road

Mr. Wm. Scroxton, Higham-road

Miss Taylor, Newton-Bromshold

Mr. G. Yates, High-street

As the weeks went by, so the shoe factories and streets were mounting their own collection. The lists give some idea of the size of the factory workforce, and an idea of wealth. It is clear that some of the factories were closing workshops, as the list of employees contributing are women only. Not all would have afforded to make a contribution but, all those able to probably did.

Each week the same article (above) was printed and the collectors listed again. Note: The numbering of the lists gets adrift after the 6th list and for three weeks
they printed different lists headed 8th List - so I have numbered them consecutively.

The Rushden Echo, 13th May 1898, transcribed by Kay Collins

The Case of Miss WoodingA meeting of the committee was held on Wednesday evening in the Church-room, Rushden. Satisfaction was expressed at the fact that half the required amount had now been raised and acknowledged in the columns of the Rushden Echo. It was hoped the lists at the factories would be taken round before May 23rd, on which day a collector will call for them.
