Notes on the Tailby and Ainsworth Families, from Alan Ainsworth
Tailby and Ainsworth

TAILBY FAMILY

GEORGE (1787 - 1866 )*

It appears that George was born in Desborough, Northamptonshire. The earliest information I could find was a baptism on the 24th September 1787. George married Susannah Todd at Rothwell in 1822 and moved to Rushden in 1827. In the 1841 census where George is listed as aged 50 living with a Susannah (wife, born in Irthringborough) and son George aged 15 years in the High Street, Rushden. He is listed as a wheelwright by trade. By 1851 they are still living at 14, High Street, Rushden and George it appears has acquired some farm land as he is listed as Wheelwright and Farmer of 40 acres. In 1861 they are still at the same address and George is aged 73 they also have at this time a servant Elizabeth Poole (who was born in London) living with them. George passed away sometime between October and December 1866 as registered in free BMD, followed by Susannah between July and September 1867. The Northamptonshire Postal Directory 1847 has George listed as a Wheelwright.

END OF GENERATION

GEORGE (1826 - 1907)*

The earliest information I could find was in the 1841 census where George aged 15 years is living in Rushden High Street (there is no number) with his parents George and Susannah. Both in the 1851 and 1861 census they were still living at 14, High Street, Rushden and George is listed as a farmer’s son working on the farm. There is evidence that he married Sarah Jaques between January and March 1866. (Free BMD Vol 3b Page 186). The 1871 census has George living at 19, High Street, Rushden, Northamptonshire and working as Farm Occupier of 40 acres and employing 3 men. There is a George Tailby listed as a farmer and grazier in the Northamptonshire Slater's Directory (page 24). He also had one son George aged 3 and a servant Sarah Pack living with him. By 1881 George and Sarah had five children living with them, George, Charles, Mary, Clement, and Gertrude Emma. George at this time is listed as the Proprietor of Sand Pits, Employer, and the family were living at Tailby Lodge which was situated on Higham Road, Rushden. The 1891 lists an additional two children Sarah E, and Gerald T, and George is listed as a Sand Merchant. It appears that sometime during the 1896 (ref funeral notice Mrs. Tailby) the family moved from Rushden to Stanwick as the 1901 census has them living at Top End and George is listed as living on own means, obviously retired. The Rushden Echo & Argus mentions George in the 1st June 1898 edition and again in the 7th October edition as being a member of the Stanwick Council. It would appear that George died in 1907 and his death was registered in Thrapston. He was survived by Sarah who died two years later. It is obvious from the investigations into this family that they had considerable means to be able to live in later life.

END OF GENERATION

GEORGE (1868 - 1931)

The first son born to George and Sarah between January and March 1868 in Rushden, Northamptonshire. He is listed in the 1871 census aged 3 years and again in the 1881 census aged 13 years but by 1891 he had left home and was living in Twist Street, Alton, Hampshire, with a widow Edith Hale and her family. George was working as a Grocers Manager. Some time between October and December 1897 he married Ellen Lamb. In 1901 they were both living in Higham Ferrers, High Street, with Ellen’s parents, he was still working as a grocer. At this time they also had two children living with them, Nellie G. aged 2 years and Grace E. aged one year. George is listed as a Provision Merchant, employer. The 1911 census has them living at 123, Higham Road, Rushden. George is still listed as a Grocer and Provision Merchant, employer. He along with a man named Charles Putnam opened and operated 3 grocery shops in Rushden High Street, Newton Road & Wellingborough Road, they also had another in Irthringborough High Street. It appears that George along with his sister Sarah Elizabeth received money in 1919 from a probate due to his brother Thomas’s unfortunate death in the first world war. Free BMD has a George Tailby’s death registered in Wellingborough in1931 aged63 years. Ellen died in 1948 aged 80 years.

CHARLES (1872 - 1960)*

The second son born to George and Sarah between July and September 1872 in Rushden, Northamptonshire. He is listed in the 1891 census living in Rushden with his parents and working as a Curriers Apprentice and as a Currier in the 1901 census (this was a trade within the leather tanning industry). He married Emily Annie Mole* of Souldrop sometime between September and December 1895 and they had one daughter Mabel Annie in the June quarter of 1896 and were living at 16, Kimbolton Road, Higham Ferrers in 1901. In 1905 they had a second daughter Gertrude Emily. By 1911 they move to a house at 2, School Board Place at the top of Corporation Terrace which has now been demolished along with Corporation Terrace and has been incorporated into the school grounds. At this time Emily was working as a Tailoress. This is where he was living when I first met him. In 1915 according to the marriage certificate of Mabel he was still working as a currier. In the 1950’s he moved to Risdene a retirement home almost opposite the bottom of Washbrook Road, on the main A6 Rushden to Higham Ferrers Road. This is where he spent his last days and passed away on the 20th April 1960 in the Park Hospital, Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, leaving a sum of £1203.2s.1d to Muriel Gwendolin Ellison.

ROYAL WELCH FUSILIERS
Spelt the native way

Corporal 893 Albert William Ainsworth

The Welch Fusiliers was a Territorial battalion based in North East Wales. William as he was known joined the Territorials in April 1911.

The battalion was called to duty on the 4th August 1914 and William joined them the next day and was promoted to Lance Corporal the same day. He transferred to Higham Ferrrers with the battalion and from there on July 1915 they were sent to Gallipoli arriving on the 9th August, with a battalion strength of 26 officers and 811 other ranks. By October 1915 there were only 88 other ranks left.

We do not know for sure exactly when William was wounded by shrapnel in both legs but we suspect that it was only a week or two after landing. He was transferred to Malta on the 17th August 1915 and from there he returned to Devenport on the 5th October 1915 before being discharged on the 25th April 1916.

Prior to leaving for Gallipoli he married Mabel Annie Tailby and before his death in 1937 they had 5 children.

MARY (1873 – 1970)

The eldest daughter born to George and Sarah on the 12th March 1873 in Rushden, Northamptonshire. The earliest record of Mary is in the 1881 census where she is aged 8 years living with her parents at Tailby Lodge in Higham Road, Rushden and registered as a Scholar. In 1891 she is still at the same address but it appears that she is not working at that time. By 1901 the family had moved to Stanwick and they were living at Top End, Mary is living off her own means at this time. The 1911 census has Mary living at the Limes, Stanwick. Living alone as a housekeeper, obviously living off her own means.

Mary married Arthur F. Gates some time between April and June 1915 at Rugby, Warwickshire and to my knowledge they had no children.

CLEMENT TODD (1876 - 1951)

The earliest record I could find for Clement was the 1881 census, where he is listed as living with his parents. It appears that by 1891 he had left home and was living with George and Elizabeth Jordan in the Square, at Earls Barton and was working as an apprentice Grocer and Provisions Merchant. In 1901 he was married and working as a Grocers Assistant and was living at 21, Midland Road, Rushden, Northamptonshire. He married Ada Helsdown some time between October and December 1898. the 1901 census has them still at the same address and by this time they had a son George. There was a boarder by the name of Alfred Helsdown living with them. The free BMD has a Clement Todd being born and also dying in 1902 and this it would appear was their son. In 1911 the census has them still living at the same address , George is 11 years and there is a Lizzy Helsdown aged 32 years living with them. Kelly's directory 1940 M-Y has Ada listed as a shopkeeper at the Midland road address and this fits with a story that my uncle told me (that they owned a sweet shop in Midland Road Rushden). I have found that there is a birth in 1914 of a Dorothy G. Tailby whose mother is listed as Helsdown so this may be a daughter. It appears from Free BMD that Ada passed away in 1947sometime between April and June. A further record in free BMD of Clement Todd Tailby dying in 1951 is also available. In addition to this there is a probate notice leaving a sum of £1053 4s 6d to Dorothy Gwedoline Sharp. This would verify that Dorothy was his daughter.

George A (1899 - 5th June1916) Seaman killed in the war. Aged 17 years

Clement Todd (1902 - 1902)

Dorothy Gwendoline. (1914 - 4th April1956) Married Wilfred Harold Sharp. See Probate.

GERTRUDE EMMA (1878 - 1961)

The earliest record I could find for Gertrude was the 1881 census, where she is listed as living with her parents and the 1891 census has her still living in Rushden with the family. However by 1901 she had moved out of home and was living at 78, High Street, Dudley, and is listed as working as a Clerk. It appears that she may have been working for a George an Maud Whitford, who owned a Bookseller and Stationer business. In 1911 it appears that Gertrude was boarding with Elizabeth Jane Cotterill who is listed as a boarding house keeper at 19, Hanover Street, Belorane Road, Edgbaston, and is still working as a Clerk. Free BMD has a Gertrude E. Tailby married to Tom C. Woods in Thrapston. It also has a person of the same name having died in 1961 in Rugby Tom it appears had died in 1940 also in Rugby. I have not been able to find any issue from this marriage.

SARAH (1881 – 1881)

SARAH ELIZABETH (1883 – 1961)

The eldest daughter born to George and Sarah some time between January and March 1883 at Rushden, Northamptonshire. In 1891 she is aged 8 years and is living at Tailby Lodge with her parents. By 1901 the family had moved to Stanwick, she is 18 years old and they were living at Top End, Sarah is living off her own means at this time. The 1911 census has her named as Elizabeth visiting Jesse and Ann Marlow who were living at 129, Union Street, Desborough, Market Harborough, Northamptonshire. It appears that she may also have still been living with Mary in Stanwick at this time. I know that she was single when I knew her and that she was living away from Northamptonshire in the 1950’s. She eventually passed away in Rugby.

THOMAS GERALD (1887 - 1918)

The youngest son born to George and Sarah on the 30th June1888 in Rushden, Northamptonshire. The 1881 census has him aged 3 years living at Tailby Lodge with his parents and he is still at the same address in 1901 by which time he is at school. At some time he emigrated to Canada and was living in Junfell, Saskatchewan. His emigration may have been on the Steamship Victorian of the Allan Line that left Liverpool on 18th March 1910 bound for the Port of St. John, New Brunswick Canada. The shipping manifest has him listed as a Laborer. It appears from an attestation paper that he enlisted in as a Private in the 217th Battalion 19th Reserve Canadian Regiment, Canadian on the 6th December 1915. Records show that Thomas died in France on the 26th September 1918 in the first world war and is buried in Queant Road cemetery Buissy in the first world war. At This time he was registered as being in the 46th Battalion of the Canadian infantry. his service number was '10009287'.
