Mr William Arthur Edmund Sherwood

The funeral service for Mr William Arthur Edmund Sherwood, former head-teacher of Rushden South End and Newton Road Primary and Junior Schools took place on Saturday at Rushden Park Road Baptist Church.

Mr Sherwood, who was 71, died in Northampton General Hospital. His home was at 275 Wellingborough Road, Rushden.

As a child he attended Wollaston Council School and, after training at Borough Road Teachers’ Training College, London, he returned there to take up his first post.

He taught at Rushden Newton Road and intermediate schools before becoming head-teacher of South End School in 1932. In 1935 he went back to Newton Road as head-teacher.

Mr Sherwood’s interest in education continued outside school hours. He was once principal of Rushden Evening Institute and for many years he was an active member of the National Union of Teachers, holding office at both county and local level.

He was an active sportsman in his youth and later was associated with county and district schools’ sports organisations.

Mr Sherwood was a Freemason for more than thirty years. He was also a former chairman of Rushden Operatic Society.

He leaves a widow, son and daughter, daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.
