Mr Bailey Mortimer (born 1842) came to Rushden in the mid 1870s, and is first listed in the 1877 directory. He came from Hutton-le-Hole, YKS, bringing his wife Elizabeth (nee Ward, born Marwood, DUR).

Rectory Farm

He took on the tenancy of Rectory Farm, Newton Road, where Bailey was farming 285 acres and employing four men to help. Here they had two children, William R B in 1878 and Margaret H in 1880.
Elizabeth died in 1883 and was buried at St Mary’s Church. Later he also farmed Eastfields Farm, Court Estate.
Bailey then employed Mary Sutton Rowlatt as his housekeeper. She served him for 33 years.
He also served Rushden Urban Council and the Board of Guardians. At Newton Bromswold Mr. Mortimer was a long-serving churchwarden, and on the local Education Committee, and a member of the Rushden Conservative Club.
His brother, Robert lived at Ravenstone BKM, but moved to Rushden, to Eastfields Farm, Court Estate.
Bailey Mortimer moved to Newton Bromswold in 1908, where he died in 1924 and was buried in the Churchyard.
