Death of Mr Bailey Mortimer

Funeral at Newton Bromshold

Bailey MortimerAt the ripe old age of 81, the death took place very peacefully on Saturday at "The Cottage," Newton Bromshold, of Mr. Bailey Mortimer, retired farmer. Dr. Muriset, of Rushden, had been in attendance for some time, the deceased having suffered from seizure on Boxing Day, following about three years of failing health. Born at Hatton-le-Hole, Yorkshire, the son of a farmer, Mr. Mortimer came to this district about 40 years ago. He had not been long resident here when his wife died. Mr. Mortimer was for many years tenant-farmer at the Rectory Farm, Rushden, and some time after he had taken over Rectory Farm he also occupied Eastfields Farm. He gave up the Rectory Farm about 20 years ago.

For a number of years deceased was a member of the Rushden Urban Council and of the Wellingborough Board of Guardians. At Newton Mr. Mortimer long held the office of churchwarden, and he served on the local Education Committee. A member of the Rushden Conservative Club, he had occupied the position of chairman with much ability, being a keen supporter of the Conservative cause.

Deceased leaves one daughter, two grandsons, and one granddaughter to mourn their loss.

The funeral took place at Newton Bromshold on Wednesday, the Rev. W. H. McCleery (Rector of Newton), officiating. The chief mourners were Mr. and Mrs. Williams (son-in-law and daughter); Miss Dora Williams and Mr. Reg Mortimer (grandchildren); Mrs. F. Mortimer (daughter-in-law). [details of other mourners, the service, and wreaths follow]

During the time of the funeral service residents of the Court Estate had their blinds down. The flag at the Conservative Club was flown at half-mast from the announcement of the death until after the funeral.

Messrs. Whittington and Tomin were the undertakers. The coffin, of polished elm, with brass fittings, bore the inscription: "Bailey Mortimer, Born Nov. 13, 1842, Died Jan. 12, 1924."

Rushden Echo, 25th January 1924

A Memorial Service at Newton Bromswold was held on Sunday last in the Parish Church in the evening. The Rev W H McCleery officiated. There was a good congregation. The Rector referred to the long connection of Mr Mortimer with the Newton Bromswold Church, of which he was for many years Churchwarden, and was one of the managers of the Church Day Schools, also acting as correspondent during the intervals between the Rectors appointments, and had resided at “The Cottage” for nearly 30 years. The Rector spoke of the great kindness which Mr Mortimer always showed to him and the late Rectors during their difficult services to the church, always offering the greatest hospitality to them when they visited the parish. Mr H Gadsden presided at the organ.
