1953 Coronation

Co-operation Programme

We have a programme too—one that embraces the welfare of the people of this land as Her Majesty embraces their hearts. We seek to serve you; your membership is not only in a shop, or a Society, but in an Idea — the idea that each may co-operate for the benefit of all.

So when you join your Co-operative Society you will find, besides receiving the benefits of a modern store, that you are participating in a partnership, that you are a Shareholder, that you draw a Dividend. You will find when your Society's sales rise that you benefit, you will find services available to you, facilities open to you, that are normally not found elsewhere. You will, more than ever before, find yourself a member of the community.

Rushden Co-operative Society Limited

A Coronation Message from the Chairman & Vice-Chairman of the Rushden Coronation Celebrations Committee

'This year', on June 2nd, Our Gracious Queen will be crowned with with all the splendour and pomp of traditional pageantry in Westminster Abbey.

Throughout the British Commonwealth of Nations there will be rejoicing and celebrations on Coronation Day. Only a privileged few will be able to see the actual ceremony in Westminster Abbey, so we, in common with millions of Her Majesty's subjects, will desire to celebrate the occasion with our own folk in our own town.

The Rushden Coronation Committee has made arrangements for a series of events to commemorate the day, details of which will be found in this programme. We commend to you these preparations as a fitting, joyous and dignified way of expressing your loyalty to Her Majesty.

Our minds and hearts will be filled with devotion and loyalty for our beautiful and gracious young Sovereign as Her Majesty solemnly dedicates herself to a life of service as the anointed head of the British Commonwealth of Nations.

We are on the threshold of a new era and our fervent hope is that her reign, in service, inspiration and enthusiasm, may equal the glory and high adventure of the reign of Queen Elizabeth I.

Rushden and Higham Ferrers Chamber of Trade

A Coronation Message

In common with all the townspeople of Rushden and Higham Ferrers, the shop-keepers offer their loyal greetings to our Queen on her Coronation.

On this joyful yet solemn occasion our Queen dedicates herself to the service of her people. In their own degree, your local tradesmen pledge themselves to serve you in their several ways both faithfully and well. Their skill and knowledge is devoted to offering their customers the widest possible variety of all kinds of merchandise, selected from the markets of Great Britain and the Commonwealth.

To the art of serving their customers with the goods they need at the time they want them, your private traders bring years of experience of local folk and their requirements. They know your individual preferences; they give you friendly and cheerful service. Trust them with your continued patronage, they will be proud and happy to serve you in the future as well as they have done in the past.

A Coronation Message from Rushden Ministers’ Fellowship

At the Queen's first Privy Council after her accession she said:

"I shall always work as my father did throughout his reign, to uphold constitutional government, and to advance the happiness and prosperity of my peoples, spread as they are all the world over. I know that in my resolve to follow his shining example of service and devotion, I shall be inspired by the loyalty and affection of those whose Queen I have been called to be, and by the Counsel of their elected parliaments. I pray that God will help me to discharge worthily this heavy task "that has been laid upon me so early in my life".

A noble utterance, and a prayer that we may all well re-echo, and on Coronation Day, the day of the Queen's crowning and her anointing, we are called as a nation, and as a commonwealth of peoples, to join in an act of dedication, as she has dedicated her life to the service of God, and her people.

Coronation Sunday will be preparatory to this, and will provide the opportunity for all to join in an act of corporate worship and dedication, for if the Queen is to discharge her heavy task, she must have a praying people behind her.

In a democracy such as purs, we share the great privilege, but we must also share the heavy responsibilities. Each for all and all for each, and there is a truth in the wartime slogan apposite to the present moment, "It all depends on me, and I depend on God". To acknowledge and act up to this, is the best contribution we can make in preparation for the Coronation and to support our Young Queen as she is crowned for the service of her people. This, too, will add meaning to the prayer we all pray in the National Anthem, "God Save Our Gracious Queen".

On behalf of the Ministers' Fellowship.

Edwin A. Green, Rector.
