Rushden Echo, 9th June 1916, transcribed by Kay Collins
Arthur Harris

Hand Amputated—A youth named Arthur Harris, aged 15, living at Irchester, was taken to the Northampton Hospital on Monday afternoon with a crushed right hand, which unfortunately, it was found necessary to amputate. The accident was sustained while the youth was working in Mr. W. L. Duncan’s boot factory, Sartoris-road, Rushden.

He was working a pounding machine when his hand was caught in the machinery and severely crushed. Mr. Thompson, one of the employees, rendered first aid, and Pte. O’Connor, of the Ambulance Brigade, also rendered assistance. Harris was taken to Dr. Baker’s, and his removal to Northampton Hospital was ordered. A motor-car belonging to Mr. Okins was waiting at the surgery, and Harris was immediately taken to Northampton Hospital by Pte. O’Connor and Kilpack, of the Ambulance Brigade, where, as stated, amputation was found necessary.
