Rushden Tender Accepted—At the meeting of the Northants Education Committee on Saturday the School Buildings Sub-Committee reported that tenders were received for the erection of the new Council School at Raunds. The tenders ranged from £5,921 13s. to £7,168, and the Sub-Committee recommended that the lowest, that of Messrs. J. G. Pullen and Sons, be accepted. Messrs. Pullen, however, stated that, having obtained the large contract for the Secondary School for Girls at Northampton, they would be unable to devote the attention to the Raunds School they would like to do, and asked to withdraw their tender. It was agreed that the next lowest tender—that of Mr. R. Marriott, of Rushden, £6,107, be accepted.

Steeplejacks at Rushden Church
Repairs to St Mary’s Church Tower
Considerable interest has been aroused this week by the sight of steeplejacks at work on the tower of St Mary’s Church, Rushden, and many people have stopped to look at the workmen in their precarious positions.
This work has been necessitated by the fact that several stones have become loose in the flying buttresses, and one or two minor repairs are necessary. There is no serious structural defect, and it is anticipated that the whole scheme will not involve a cost of more than £50. This, it is hoped, will be met oit of the current funds.
The work is being carried out by Mr Robert Marriott, of Rushden.

In 1967 When the Milton Keynes Development Corporation was established in 1967 to provide a new city, centred around Bletchley, Charles Drabble’s businesses were well placed to take advantage of the new construction opportunities. A new company, Milton Keynes Builders Ltd was formed jointly by Charles Drabble (Holdings) Ltd and Robert Marriott Ltd of Rushden. That new company secured the first large-scale building contract of the new city of Milton Keynes. The £7M contract was awarded by the Greater London Council (GLC) acting as agents for the Bletchley Urban Council and was for the construction of 2,000 houses over a five-year period, on a 257 acre site at Water Eaton, Bletchley.

Totectors' Expansion

ALAN HUTCHINS (left), Managing Director of Totectors, Ltd., the UK's largest manufacturer of safety footwear, and Eric Booth, Managing Director of Robert Marriott, the Rushden-based building contractors, signing a contract for the first phase of a £½ million expansion programme for the construction of a new warehouse extension and loading bays to Totectors' existing warehouse and main office block in Duck Street, Rushden
The initial building contract, which is in the region of £250,000, will provide, in addition to the extension, a warehouse conveyor system for dispatch, loading bays, and associated external works, as well as an internal lift, sprinklers, electrics and heating.
Totectors, who are members of the GKN group of companies, regard quality and service as the two most important aspects of their business, and this contract represents the first step in extensive expansion plans.

Rushden Firm Builds Bedford’s New Ambulance Complex
Robert Marriott Ltd, the Rushden based building contractors, have started work on the new headquarters for the Bedfordshire Ambulance Service.
The project, valued at £783,000, comprised offices, an ambulance garage, and training wing at Hammond Road on the Elms Farm Industrial Estate, Bedford. The new complex, designed and funded by the North Wing Thames Regional Health Authority, is expected to open in April 1987.
At a “Sod-Cutting” ceremony to mark the start of building work, Mr. Tony Norman, Managing Director of Robert Marriott Ltd, invited Mr. Peter Cushing, Chairman of the Joint Ambulance Liaison Committee (which oversees the service on behalf of the managing authority North Bedfordshire Health Authority and the South Bedfordshire Health Authority) to cut the first turf.
For Robert Marriott Limited this contract is the latest in a long line of prestigious contracts undertaken in the Bedford area. Recent schemes include the upgrading of operating theatre suites at the General Hospital (North Wing) and the reconstructed Midland Road Station and Amenities Building for British Rail and Phases 1 and 2 of the Brewery Development at Havelock Street for Charles Wells.

Craftsmanship Award for Rushden Firm
Robert Marriott Limited, the Rushden based building contractors have received the Craftmanship Award from the Bedfordshire Association of Architects for Brickwork at a recently completed contract at the Cranfield Institute of Technology.
Certificates for the bricklayers who undertook the work were presented to Mr. Geoff Collier, Site Agent for the Project.
The award reflects the company’s continued emphasis on quality in their building work being but one of a series conferred on them.
