Rushden's Casualty List - Victims of The War
Lance-Corpl. A. Bird, R.E., of 136, Midland-road, Wellingborough, has been killed in action in France. At the time of joining the Colours he was in the employ of Mr. R. Marriott, builder, Rushden.

Outing—The employers and employees of Mr R Marriott and Son, builders, went by two charabancs on Saturday for an outing to Leamington. A party of about 60 started from Rushden at 7.45 and arriving in Leamington soon after noon, proceeding via Kettering and Market Harborough. Lunch was served at Leamington, and afterwards the party continued on to Stratford-on-Avon. After a very interesting look-round, tea was served. They returned via Weedon, Daventry, and Northampton, and arrived home about midnight after a very enjoyable day.

Builders’ Outing—A party of 60 members and employees of Mr R Marriott, builder and contractor (including the two principals, Mr R Marriott and Mr R A Marriott) had a day’s outing on Saturday, touring in three counties. Two of the United Counties saloon omnibuses were engaged. A run was made to Stamford, where a short stop was made, and at Grantham the company were entertained by the principals to an excellent lunch. Proceeding further, visits were paid to Loughborough, Melton Mowbray, and Leicester. Fair weather favoured the venture, and a capital day was spent.

Evening Telegraph 1988 - A winning combination 1936
FOR this evening's Memory Lane we go back 52 years to the summer of 1936 which obviously proved something of a winner for one Rushden cricket team.
The team was that of building firm Marriotts.
Obviously the Marriott family took its cricket seriously. That is founder Robert Marriott standing on the left with his stick, and son Major Alan Marriott is seated third from the left in front row behind the main cup.
Others in the picture include, back row: Harold Cook, Bill Cade, Bunny Brown, Jim Taylor, Alan Bryant, Jack Hindmarsh, George Roper
front row: Matt Roper, Fred Purser, Bert Ingram, Bert Inwood and Sid Miles.
The business Robert Marriott founded is still flourishing today as
Kier Marriott, part of the Beazer group.

Royal Presentation for Marriotts - In the 1969 Concrete Society Awards a special Certificate of Commendation was presented to Robert Marriott Ltd, as general contractors for the £1-million new County Offices for the Buckinghamshire County Council at Aylesbury, designed by the County Architect and Planning Officer, Mr. F. B. Pooley, CBE, FRIBA, FRICS. The actual concrete work was by main sub-contractors, Messrs. Concrete (Southern) Ltd.

Long service
Jim Broderick, a plumbing foreman with Robert Marriott, the Rushden based building contractors, has been presented with a gold watch to mark 25 years' service with the company.
The presentation was made by Tony Norman, company managing director.
Mr Broderick joined Marriotts as an apprentice plumber in 1961 and it was one of his first contracts for the company, working at Reading's Borough Court Hospital, that he met his wife, a nurse. The Brodericks, who live at Whitefriars, Rushden, have two sons.

Major Honour for Referee Brian - Referee Brian Hill, a wages and cost accountant with Kier Marriott has received the greatest honour in the national game. He has recently been appointed to take charge of this year's FA Cup Final between Liverpool and Wimbledon at Wembley Stadium.
Brian, from Barton Seagrave is currently in his twenty-fifth year with Kier Marriott, he has made rapid progress in refereeing circles and is widely considered as one of the top six officials in the English game.
A FIFA official Brian, who will be a linesman at this summer's European Championship Finals in West Germany, made his Wembley debut in charge of an England versus Scotland Schoolboy match in 1977, and refereed the FA Challenge Trophy-Final five years ago. More recently, he appeared at the Mercantile Credit Festival at the Stadium in April, refereeing the final between Nottingham Forest and Sheffield Wednesday. - David Coleman

Ladies’ Day with Robert Marriott Ltd
|
An outstanding example of good industrial relations in the building industry today is that which exists between the management and staff of Robert Marriott Ltd., the well-known Midland contractors. This fact is illustrated here by Colonel J. R. Marriott, the managing director of the Company, showing the wives of some of his men around the kitchens of a new office block in Leicester. In this way the ladies take and interest and pride in their husbands' work, as indeed they have a right to, for Marriotts have achieved a remarkable reputation for good quality high-speed building. This particular project, a £115,000 new office block for B.B. Chemicals Ltd. was completed in precisely one year to the day in accordance with the time clause in the contract - a clause no other contractor was prepared to accept.
