Rushden Industrial Co-operative Society

No. 2 and No. 5 Stores

No. 2 Store in Queen Street - Butchery & Bakery & Grocery - opened in 1896

This photograph, recently discovered, has been shared with us this week (July 2018). As is proudly declared on the board above the doorway, it is the “Rushden Industrial Co-operative Society Stores No.2” and is in three parts. With the blind is the Butchery department, then a Bakehouse, and at then a Grocery & Grindery shop, at the top of lower Queen Street. At the side of the butchery a window frame is propped against the fence. The front window panels were often removable at butchers and fishmongers. A young boy is standing in the doorway. It was opened in 1896.

By enhancing the faded picture, we read ‘Tate Pure Sugar’ on a large wooden box near the door.
Behind the lamps the windows have advertising, nearest the door the top panel has (in a semicircle) ‘CADB  YS’ and below the badge ‘CO  ’ and this suggests Cadbury’s Cocoa.
Grindery is tacks and thread etc. for shoemaking as some was still done at home.

Also on the wall above there is  a large advert for “Reckitt’s Blue” an additive iused n the final rinse - to keep “whites” looking white, not grey.
