Information on Harris' Bakery, kindly sent by his gt gr daughter Judith, 2024
Wright's then Harris' Bakery
Duck Street, High Street, 57 Newton Road [now 77 Newton Road]


The business was begun by William Wright who was born at Knuston Lodge in 1814, son of William a farmer and Elizabeth.

William junior married Emily (nee Wallis born at Selling KEN) and they were living in Duck Street in 1851. Here they started the bakery business and daughter Ellen was born there later that year, and son John was born two years later. Soon after they moved into the High Street, and remained there for 30 years. Having worked as a baker for 42 years, he died in 1890.

The advert below shows that a more recent employee in the bakery had been Charles Myers.

John Ougden Wright son of William, took over the business and he moved to Newton Road in 1890.

He took on Charles Webb assist in the bakery. Further research shows that Charles Webb married John's daughter Edith Ellen at Park Road Baptist Church in May 1908. Their son John Ougden Webb was born in 1909.

John O Wright and his wife moved to live in Pratt Road, where they stayed until at least 1921.

I wish to inform my many customers that I have disposed of the business of a Baker, recently carried on by me in Newton Road, Rushden, to MR. HERBERT DEACON HARRIS, who took over the same as from the 24th June 1919. All debts due to and owing to me in respect of business up to the 24th of June will be received and paid by me at 33, Pratt Road Rushden. The business will in future be carried on by Mr. Harris, who, I hope will receive the support for many years accorded to me.

Herbert Deacon Harris had married Margaret Isabel Hill in 1818 and bought the bakery in Newton Road in 1919.
