Frank James was born in 1880 at Podington, eldest son of Jesse, a carpenter and Margaret (born Barmouth).
Aged 21, Frank came to Rushden with his mother Margaret and step-father Thomas Cuff, a grocer, and was living in High Street in 1891.
The following year he married Elizabeth Ann Wood in the Salford district of Lancashire.
Frank started in business as a carpenter and undertaker and was working in Alfred Street but moved the business to Rectory Road by 1903.
In 1901 the family was living at 49 Victoria Road, Frank was aged 31, with his wife Elizabeth (born Haversham BKM), and here they had Reginald E in 1894, Leonard in 1898 and Ethel in 1900. before moving to Portland Road about 1902.
