Horsley's & Ward's Corner area
Plan drawn about 1914
2 & 4 High Street - c1914 - 1-5 Newton Road

The plan is interesting as it shows the back areas and yards behind, and also some walkways between the buildings. In the yard behind Horsley's there was the pump and well, a note added to the copy "known as St Mary's well." This was shared with Charles Ward, grocer's at the corner with High Street.

Some Peeps at Old Rushden
Gone For Ever
A bit of Newton-road, near Ward’s Corner, pulled down some years ago, the site being now occupied by the shops of Mr. F. Atkinson, hairdresser, Mr. Cave, &c.

Frederick Atkins, hairdresser and tobacconist was listed in Kelly's 1910 and 1914 directories. Walter Cave, outfitter, is listed in 1911 Bennet's directory, but not in Kelly's, and was living in Denmark Road. They shared the back yard with a right of way to a factory.

These two become a hotel kept by Mrs Banks as the ITO Commercial Hotel, and she appears to have left the shops at the front to Abington tailors, and the ITO cafe. Later Ron Jaques took part as a Radio shop.

The factory is possibly a three storey building where Darlow & West began shoemaking c1908. They soon moved to Gordon Street, but were declared bankrupt soon after.
