This block was built in 1937 when the High Street was widened. Rollie Cox's supper rooms and fish shop were on this site, but they were given notice of the widening to be done in 1935, so moved to 45 High Street, and opened as Rollie's Cafe.
Studio 13 moved into the building in the late 1960s, before moving to 133 High Street. They sold paper, card, and offered a photocopying service. They framed pictures, sold card mounts, general stationery, and corners for putting photos into albums, albums and photo frames, etc.
Housewives Choice opened next, and offered a repair service for domestic "white goods" and also sold spares as well as new machines. If you needed a new kettle element, or a new hot pate for a cooker, they were easy to fit, so you could do a simple repair and keep it in use. Or you could book for the engineer to come to your home and fix it for you.
In those days we could go and look and see just what was on sale and choose according to needs, or preference of colour. There was a good choice and we could judge the quality too! So they are one of a few of long service in our High Street, along with Osborne's Sports and Toys.
