The Sergeant was ill in hospital when he received a silver cigarette case from his Colonel, engraved: “Presented to Sergt. E. Wright by his Colonel for bravery and devotion to duty and for personal services to myself on the Gallipoli Peninsula.”

Sergt. Wright was in Germany when the war broke out, and left the country on the last train for foreigners. He represented a leather firm in Germany. He joined the Army soon after arriving in England.
