Devotion to Duty – Award For a Rushden Brigade Runner

Private Wheatley
Pte. Harold Samuel Wheatley, of the Inniskilling Fusiliers, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Wheatley, of 14 Park-place, Rushden, and husband of Mrs. Wheatley, of 1 Sussex-place, has been awarded the Decoration Militaire for constant devotion to duty and gallantry from Sept. 29th. to Oct. 28th. 1918, in the advance from Ypres to Ingoyghem. Pte. Wheatley, whilst employed as a brigade runner at advanced Brigade Headquarters, never failed to carry out his duties through the heaviest fire, regardless of his own personal safety. On one occasion, when the enemy made counter attacks, he helped to carry munitions to the battalions in the line. He worked throughout the whole of the concluding operations with the same devotion to duty, setting a splendid example.
