Guarded Convoys for Normandy – Rushden Naval Officer Wins D.S.M.

When Chief Petty Officer Bernard S. Rollings, R.N., returned to Rushden on Wednesday evening from visiting his wife in Northampton Hospital, he obtained his first knowledge that he had been awarded the D.S.M. when he read about it in the “Evening Telegrapgh.”

CPO RollingsThe award has been made “for distinguished services in H.M. ships and light coastal craft in safeguarding the passage of troops and supplies during the assault on Normandy.”

Chief P.O. Rollings, whose home is at 148 St. Margaret’s-avenue, has been home on 76 hours leave, but returned on Thursday. He has had five years with the Royal Navy, volunteering at the outbreak of the war, and up to two months ago was on motor torpedo boats. Previous to service he was employed as a motor mechanic at the Wargate Garage in Wellingborough-road. There is a seven-years-old son.

The new D.S.M., aged 28 years, is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Rollings, of Raunds, and was educated at Raunds Council School.

ROLLINGS Peacefully on 23rd August 2010 at Cliftonville Residential Home, Bernard aged 94 years of Rushden. Dearly beloved Husband of the late Gladys. Loving Father of Keith, Mavis and Jean. A much loved Grandfather and Great Grandfather. After much suffering, at last at peace. Forever in our hearts. The Funeral Service will take place at St. Mary's Church, Rushden on Friday 27th August at 3.00pm. followed by interment at Rushden Cemetery. Family flowers only please, donations if desired for Royal Naval Association may be sent to A. Abbott and Sons, Independent Family Funeral Directors, Bedford Road, Rushden, NN10 OLZ. 01933 312142.
