Mr. Ralph Rice, manager of the Rushden Newton-road factory of Messrs. John White (Impregnable Boots) Ltd., has been awarded by His Majesty the King the British Empire Medal (Civil Division) in recognition of his service in the employ of that firm.
 He was notified of the award by the Ministry of Supply, who conveyed Sir Andrew Duncan’s congratulations to him, and his name appeared in the Birthday Honours List in the London Gazette last Friday.
Mr. Rice, who is 60 years old, is a native of Rushden, and has worked for Messrs. John White, Ltd., for 21 years.
A veteran of the Boer War, he joined up at 18 and served with the 3rd Northants Regiment, being awarded the South African Medal. He returned to this country from Australia in 1920, having lived there since 1911 and been employed as foreman in one of the biggest shoe factories.
He is married and resides at 50, Queen-street, Rushden. His only daughter, Mrs. Wagland, lives at 48, Queen-street. A son, who was four years old when the family went out to Australia, lost his life by drowning.
