The Rushden Echo and Argus, 15th October, 1943, transcribed by Gill Hollis
Wing-Cdr. E. F. Nind’s Fine Work
Rushden ‘Old Boy’ Gets D.F.C.
For gallantry and devotion to duty in air operations the D.F.C. has been awarded to a Rushden-born man, Acting Wing-Commander Eric Francis Nind, No. 97 Squadron R.A.F.

A/Wing Cdr. Nind is the third son of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Nind, now of Woking, who kept the Wagon and Horses Inn at Rushden prior to the last war. He is a nephew of Mr. A. T. Nichols and the late Mrs. Nichols, of 4, Alfred-street, Rushden, and is married. The Nind family left Rushden for Kingsthorpe, Northampton, and about 20 years ago moved to Woking, where A/Wing Cdr. Nind was associated with the Boy Scout movement. He was in the Merchant Navy for 12 months and then studied accountancy before joining the R.A.F.

Aged 32, he has been serving since 1937, when he was a pupil pilot, being promoted to Flt.-Lt. in 1940 and to his present rank this year. He is an old boy of Northampton Grammar School and Woking County School.

The citation states: Wing Commander Nind, now on his second tour of operational duty, has attacked many of the enemy’s most heavily defended targets in Germany, and also flown on sorties against such distant targets as Milan and Turin. A capable captain of aircraft, and an excellent flight commander, this officer has been untiring in his efforts in maintaining his flight in a high state of operational efficiency.
