He was in the 5th Platoon of B Company, along with his friend John Smith, whose son Ken passed several war service photographs to us. This is taken from a larger photograph.

Rushden Soldiers' Thanks Gratitude for Gifts
Twenty-four more boys whose names appear on the Queen street, Roll of Honour have each received a postal order for 2s. Many letters of thanks have been received by the committee, and we make the following extract:-
Lance-Corporal Walter R Watson, BEF: Your postal order has come all right, for I am having a fortnight at the seaside for rest having been such a long time in the trenches. I do not expect it will be long before I shall be at home, that is if all goes well. I do not expect I shall find Rushden the same as I left it 17 months ago, although I hope there are still the amusements going. If would be rather a bad holiday if they were not opened. I am very pleased to say I am enjoying the best of health.

Death in Captivity - Much sympathy is felt with Mr and Mrs J W Watson, of Queen-street, Rushden, who have had official news that their third son, Lance-Corpl W R Watson, 7th Northants, who was captured on March 27th, 1918, died from inflammation of the glands at Le Cateau Hospital on July 25th last. The sad news reached them on Saturday last. Their second son, Pte Geo. H Watson, 2nd Northants, was killed on Auber's Ridge on May 9th, 1915. Their eldest son, Alfred, serving in the R.N.S.B.R., was severely wounded in November, 1917, and is still in hospital as a result.
