Death of Rushden Soldier

An 18 year old soldier, Pte. Jack Edward Smart, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. G. E. Smart, of 8, Washbrook Road, Rushden, died on Friday at the Alexandra Military Hospital, Millbank, after a sudden illness.

  Pte. Smart, who was in the Army Catering Corps, collapsed while with his unit, and was admitted to the hospital the day before his death. He had been in the Army nine months.

An old boy of Rushden Intermediate School, he was formerly employed as a grocer’s assistant at the Higham Road branch of the Rushden Co-operative Society. When at home he regularly attended Rushden Mission Church.

  The funeral will take place on Tuesday, when a service at Wellingborough Rd. Mission Church will be conducted by the Rev. David A. Murray. Interment will be at Rushden cemetery.
