Funeral of Private Dennis Goode

The funeral took place of Pte Dennis Goode of 8 Winchester Rd who was killed in a recent air-raid on London, was held at Rushden on Saturday afternoon and the service conducted at the home by the Rev N P Goldhawk of the Park Road Methodist Church. At the cemetery Mr E Bennett represented the British Legion and representatives from the Ancient Order of Forresters, Park Road Methodist Church and Bible Class and various branches of the Rushden Co-operative Society were also present. The coffin was draped with the Union Jack. Many floral tributes including one from the staff of the Hove Road grocery department of the Rushden Co-operative Society.

Dennis was educated at the Rushden Intermediate School, and had worked in several departments of the Co-op, lastly at the Wellingborough-road store. He was remembered "for being tall, lanky and very reserved".

The photograph (right), displayed at an exhibition in the Heritage Centre, was taken about 1940.

Dennis was called up in 1942 and was in the 21st Armoured Dvision of the Northamptonshire Regiment. He was killed in February 1944 in an air raid whilst in London.
