Rushden Officer's Death - Lieutenant HL Eitelberg Killed by a Shell

Mrs Eitelberg, of the "Horse and Groom", Cambridge, has received news of the death in France of her husband, Lieut Louis Henry Eitelberg of the A.I.F. Writing to Mrs Eitelberg, an officer says:

"Whilst in support, your husband with other officers and NCOs went forward on the morning of the 6th to reconnoitre the front line. He had completed his task and was returning with a sergeant and an orderly when an enemy shell instantly killed him, though it did not harm the other men. It was indeed tragic, and the heartfelt sympathy of all ranks of this Battalion goes out to you in your great sorrow. Your husband was buried close to where he fell, about 2½ miles due east of Y—, and a Battalion cross erected over the grave. He was a sterling officer, and one who quickly earned the respect and admiration of all who came into contact with him. I mourn the loss of one of my most valued officers deeply."

Lieut Eitelberg, who married the youngest daughter of Mr Harry Hart, of the "Horse and Groom", Cambridge, joined the Australian Forces in May, 1915, going straight out to Egypt two months later. He landed in France in March of the following year, and in November came home for a commission. He was at Emmanuel College for some time, and on March 31st last he was gazetted. He returned to France and joined his Battalion on May 3rd. He was home on special leave to ten days in October.

As a boy the deceased officer lived in Rushden, and he attended the Alfred-street school, at the time Mr Wood was the headmaster. Deceased was the brother of Mrs Henry Tew, of 16 Ebenezer terrace, Rushden, whose husband was killed in action in 1916. The late Lieut Eitelberg, who was 26 years of age, was a cousin of Mr L Manton and Mr Harry Manton, of 27 Abington square, Northampton. One of the deceased officer's brothers (Pte W Eitelberg) is serving with the Colours.

Great sympathy will be felt with Mrs Tew in her manifold bereavements. She has during the war lost her husband Harry Tew, her brother, two cousins, a brother-in-law (Sergt Charles Tew, of Rushden), and a nephew (Rifleman Fred Tew), while Pte William Tew is a prisoner of war.
