Rushden Echo, 11th May 1917
Private W R Dilley
Receives a Card of Honour

Some gratifying news has been received by Mrs. Dilley, of the Mill House, Wymington-road, Rushden, that her son, Pte. W. R. Dilley, R.A.M.C., has received official notice for distinguished conduct in the field. He has forwarded to his mother a Card of Honour which has been awarded him, and which reads: “Your C.O. has reported that on the 9th-14th April 1917, near Arras, you showed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in clearing the forward area under fire, regardless of danger and fatigue, and I hereby award you the “Card of Honour.”—Major-Gen. – Division”.

Although Pte. Dilley is but 18 years of age, he has been on the Western front for a year and five months.

He was employed, before enlistment, by the Coxton Shoe Company, Rushden.

Another son of Mrs. Dilley, Pte. Fred Dilley, Northants Regt., was killed by a bomb on May 29th 1915, as reported in the “Rushden Echo” at the time.
