Rushden Naval Airman Awarded D.S.M.

Airman D Cox
Gallant service in the Pacific war has gained the Distinguished Service Medal for Acting Temporary Officer Airman Derrick Cox, of Rushden, who is with the Fleet Air Arm.

Announced on Wednesday the award is for bravery, skill and devotion to duty while serving H. M. ships in attacks on enemy oil installations at Palembang, Sumatra. It became known in February that "Dick" Cox, as telegraphist air-gunner of an Avenger, had taken part in an attack on Belawan-Deli harbour, his plane destroying a warehouse with its first bomb. Harbour installations, railway sidings and oil storage tanks were also attacked. P/O Cox is the second son of Mrs. L. M. Cox and the late Mr. Rollie Cox, of 150, Higham-road, Rushden. Before joining the Fleet Air Arm in 1942 he was employed by Rushden, Higham Ferrers and District Gas Co., and was a member of Higham Ferrers St John Ambulance Brigade.
