Shoetrade - Repairers


We have little information on these traders, who
played a vital role in repairing boots and shoes.

This shop adjoins the NatWest Bank in High Street so it was probably built in 1890. From 1901-1910 W Tomlinson, a tailor from Lincoln took over the shop.
About 1910 Charles W Barker, a shoemaker from Olney and his son William J moved in.

They had come to Rushden after Charles was widowed, and boarded with Mrs Wilby in Wellingborough Road in 1891. Charles married her daughter Mary who was single in 1897. In 1931 William took over the shop but soon moved to 16 Irchester Road where he remained at least until WWII.
