The brides, who were given away by their father, wore smartly-tailored costumes with hats to match, and carried bouquets of Christmas roses, carnations, lilies of the valley, lilium longiflorum, the bouquets being the gifts of the respective bridegrooms.

Five bridesmaids were in attendance, viz., the Misses Alice and Lily Smith (sisters of the brides), Miss Cora Short (sister of Bombardier Short), Miss Edie Knight and Miss Nancy Lovell (cousins of the brides). Miss Alice Smith and Miss Cora Short were charmingly gowned in shell pink silk luvisca, with hats to match, and the Misses L. Smith, E. Knight, and N. Lovell wore white Swiss embroidery dresses and pale blue hats with pink trimmings. The elder bridesmaids carried white hymn and prayer books, and the younger ones wore gold brooches, all being the gifts of the bridegrooms.

The service was choral, the hymn being “The Voice that breathed o’er Eden,” Miss Winnie Horn presiding at the organ. The best man was Mr. Ernest Haddon (brother of Corpl. Haddon).

As the happy couples left the church, Miss Horn rendered the “Wedding March,” and the wounded soldiers from the Auxiliary Hospital formed outside the church and arch with their crutches and sticks, under which the brides and bridegrooms passed. Subsequent to the ceremony a reception was held at 7 Lancaster-street, Higham, the house of the brides.

Bombardier Short, who has been in France 17 months, was prior to enlistment well known as a footballer, playing back for Rushden Fosse. Corpl. Haddon, who joined the Colours about 2½ years ago with his brother bridegroom, was also a keen football enthusiast prior to enlistment, taking part in the local Thursday games. Both couples have received many useful wedding gifts.

Saturday’s double event was the first double wedding in the ancient borough for twenty years.
