Rushden Echo & Argus, 15th May 1936
W G Wilmott 1936

Mr. William George. Wilmott, who passed away early on Tuesday at his residence,"Dulce Domum", Wellingborough-road, Rushden, was one of the best known road and general contractors and builders in this part of the country.

Born in Chelsea, London, 67 years ago, he was a son of the late Mr. Thomas Wilmott, who established the business after learning the work as a labourer and ganger. At the very time of his son's birth Mr. Thomas Wilmott was engaged as a ganger on the construction of the St. Pancras viaduct by a big London firm. He afterwards became a contractor in Rushden, making Church-street and indeed, most of the old streets of the town.

Mr. W. G. Wilmott succeeded his father in the business and carried out extensive contracts in Bedfordshire, Derbyshire, and Warwickshire. His largest undertakings in this district were the Irthlingborough sewer and water works and the Rushden sewage outfall works. His son, Mr. Herbert Wilmott took over the business in 1923 and has carried out the same type of work.

The deceased was some years ago secretary and then president of the Rushden and District Master Builders' Association, and he belonged to the Building Trades Federation. A keen sportsman, he was for some time in membership of the Rushden Town Cricket Club and Bowling Club, and a director of Rushden Sports Ltd.

Though in the last few years his health had given cause for some anxiety Mr. Wilmott was out on Sunday with his son, Mr. Herbert Wilmott, enjoying a car ride through Bedfordshire. A heart attack occurred on Monday, and Mr. Wilmott's condition  quickly became critical.

Mr. Wilmott is survived by his wife, and the children are Mrs. E. King (Wollaston), Mrs. C. George (Cheshire), Mr. W. D. Wilmott (California) and Mr. H. Wilmott (Rushden). Mr. Walter Wilmott, of Wellingborough-road, Rushden, is a brother, and the late Mr. Tom Wilmott, one-time Chairman of the Rushden Urban Council, was another.

The interment took place at Rushden Cemetery at 11.30 this (Friday) morning, following a service at the house".
